The Background:
Afghanistan Localization Program (ALP) is a project of Afghan Computer Science Association (ACSA) which is working on translation of software systems into different local languages. This will include adaptation of the software to cultural preferences, such as the type of the decimal separator, the text direction (left-to-right or right-to-left), and the format of the ZIP code or the dialog layout. The project is dealing with translation of computer glossary into local languages that will then be used by different software developing companies to ensure wide access to software, databases and online content to the people in Afghanistan. The project will also undertake the development of collation sequence, locale, normalization and sorting, find-replace, fonts, spell checker, thesaurus and other related software components.
The Microsoft Localization:

Afghanistan Localization Program an initiative of ACSA in the partnership with the Ministry of Communications (MoC) is working on Microsoft Localization. The Microsoft Localization Project was officially started on September 1, 2004, where the Project Team is working to develop the Pashto, Dari and Uzbaki versions (user interfaces) of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.

Organizational relationships:
The Computational Translator will be answerable to the Manager of Afghanistan Localization Program, with tasks to be undertaken with relevant implementing partners, project staff and primary stakeholder groups to enable a learning process, ensure inclusive decision making with respect to translations and maximize transparency and accountability.
Responsibilities and tasks:
• Translate the computer glossaries according to the standards defined by ALP
• Work on neologisms during the translation process
• Search the appropriate terminologies in dictionaries and list them in a designed format for future use.
• Share the translations with the “component’s” researcher and linguist according to the ALP plan, get their advise to ensure the quality of the work
• Proofread the work done by the translators, researchers and linguists whenever required
• Manage the lexicon of the program in all phases.
• Help in creation of automatic tools for terminological projects
• Other related activities as suggested by the manager and required by the localization team.

Qualifications and experience required:

A university degree in Pashto, Linguistics, Computer Science or IT is prioritized, 12th grade is required. Study of linguistics principals, excellent understanding of Pashto and English languages, excellent translation skills; ability to develop neologism while translating the glossaries, good skills in computing particularly of working at and understanding of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office environments, self-motivation and the ability to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment are very important.
